How to button the jacket

With the variety of men’s closets, the seemingly simple question of how to button a jacket can raise questions. Today’s Fashiongton Post will dispel all doubts and tell you when and how many buttons to fasten on your jacket or blazer.

The most common type is the single-breasted jacket (with one vertical row of buttons), so we’ll start with that.

How to button a jacket with two buttons

Two button jackets are the most popular these days. There is just one simple rule you need to know here – don’t fasten the bottom button. The origin of this interesting rule is attributed to King Edward VII of England, who ruled in the 19th century. It was he who, after a sumptuous meal, left the bottom button of his jacket unbuttoned. People in his inner circle repeated the monarch’s careless gesture out of wit. In later years, ordinary people followed this tradition of elegance, which eventually became ubiquitous and became unshakable men’s etiquette.

How to button a jacket with one button

This type of jacket is not as common as the two-button jacket. Basically, this is usually part of a suit for a solemn occasion, but there are also casual jackets of this type. Everything here is also very simple and easy to remember: one button should always be fastened.

How to button a three button jacket

It is important to note here that there are two types of three-button jackets: the traditional three-button jacket and the so-called three-button two-piece jacket. How to distinguish between them?

Traditional three-button jacket

In a traditional three-button jacket, the lapels are immediately behind the top button. The bottom button – never fasten, the middle button – always fasten and the top button – depending on the situation, should be fastened for formal occasions and can be unbuttoned.

Three Volume Two Jacket

The top button is sewn on where the lapels already start, and the lapels themselves are not pressed, just rounded. In a jacket like this, we only fasten the center button. As you can notice, in all the listed types of single-breasted jackets, we always fasten the so-called waist button.

How to fasten an undershirt

If this is a casual style, then the bottom button should not be fastened. If the suit is strict enough, then it is best to secure the undershirt with all buttons.

Double-breasted jackets

Double-breasted jackets have two vertical rows of buttons, with two or three buttons in each row. There can be more buttons, but they are few and far between. Traditionally, all double-breasted jackets are fastened with buttons.

Sometimes the question arises as to when it is appropriate to fully unbutton a jacket and under what circumstances it is best not to. There are no strict rules here, but it is recommended that this single rule of etiquette be followed: single-breasted jackets can be unbuttoned while sitting, but it is best to keep them buttoned while standing or walking.
