6 Work Staples You Should Invest in First in Your 20s
Let me start by acknowledging that three years ago when I graduated from college and got my first full-time job, the world was a very different place than it is today. I know I certainly could have used a roadmap to navigate major life transitions back then, so I can only imagine how much of a game changer a few words of advice would have been for those trying to enter the “workforce” at this particular moment.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not qualified to offer career advice, but I can recommend some key staples that will lay the foundation for a stylish and professional work closet and will (hopefully) see you through to a fulfilling career. After graduating college, I landed my current job at Who What Wear and quickly focused on upgrading my closet to fit my new role in the office and my daily life. But as a recent graduate student in my early 20s, I didn’t have the budget to overhaul my closet (nor did I want to), so I forced myself to be selective about the investments I made. I looked at pieces that fit Versatile and timeless so they would stay in my closet for years, and most importantly, those that felt elegant and professional in my new work life.
Looking back, I’m happy to report that I think I built a working closet in my 20s and I hope many of these items will stay with me through my 30s too, hey, maybe longer! Keep scrolling to discover the top six staples I recommend investing in.
1. finely tailored dark wash jeans
While I prefer the straight fit of a classic work suit, it’s not always the type of jeans that matters, it’s the wash and the details that matter. I happen to think that dark washes and black jeans always bring a polished look, so I steer clear of jeans that are too worn. Those with a tailored fit and no frayed hem are safe for work and other occasions.
2. Nice shirts
A nice top is a must because it’s a great way to add some personality to your work outfit, and I’m a fan of bubble sleeves and square collars . To make the most of your purchase, look for styles that can be easily paired with jeans, skirts and pants, and keep an eye out for necklines that are close to or above your collarbone to keep things professional.
3. slightly oversized blazer
If you ask me, the holy grail of work attire is the blazer. It’s timeless but on trend, versatile and sophisticated. I think everyone needs a 9 to 5 in their life. The one I’m wearing here happens to be a vintage men’s blazer, but there are plenty of inexpensive versions on the market in case you’re not comfortable picking one up at a thrift store.
4. camouflage dress
When I don’t feel like wearing jeans or pants, I opt for a cute mid-length dress and pair it with flats, heeled sandals or boots depending on the season and my mood. I’ve linked some of my current favorite mid-length dresses below, and they all have sleeves, but as you can see here, wearing a white t-shirt under a strapless dress is one of my go-to styling tricks for making it office – friendly.
5. Chic Flats
I never realized the value of flats until I started working in an office . Between commuting to meetings and working at a standing desk, I prefer to give my feet a break from the heels a few days a week, and ballet flats and loafers are my favorite way to do that.
6. polished work tootsie bags
Ah, the work tote – the cornerstone of any work closet. I feel like investing in a sleek leather version is great for storing all my essentials (and laptop!) Getting in and out of the office as well as a much-needed update from a flimsy canvas tote is crucial.
