Your favorite hoodie is now “in style” – and 4 runway looks prove it

If you’re simultaneously obsessed with the latest micro trends and afraid to test them out, you’ve come to the right place. It’s Ways to Wear, a monthly series in which editor Eliza Huber offers a series of outfit inspirations centered on current trends that simultaneously feel fun and overwhelming. Consider it your guide to actually wearing the coolest pieces of the moment, no matter how baffling they may seem at first.

Time and time again, Miuccia Prada comes to Fashion Month with a plethora of new ideas, both for the family business, Prada, and for her own brand, Miu Miu, which she founded in 1993. fall/winter 2023 is no exception. This time at Miu Miu, Prada’s collection seemed to focus on imperfect beauty, with models wearing pieces not usually considered chic or “fashionable,” such as leggings, sweater sets and, for the most part, dressy, hoodies, which are quickly becoming one of the most talked-about trends of the moment.

“Through examination and research, the structure of clothes and their placement on the body have changed,” the show’s press release reads. “Familiar pieces – two-piece suits, knee-length skirts, hooded sweatshirts – move across the figure, offering different strengths and vulnerabilities through their production.” In other words, Prada was able to breathe new life into long-neglected pieces through high-quality construction, interesting proportions and intentional styling.

As usual, the designer hired stylist Lotta Volkova to showcase the coolest ways to wear the collection, slipping simple gray hoodies under leather and herringbone thick tweed coats over laced cashmere cardigans and turtleneck sweaters. Some models wore soft leggings and sneakers, while others simply went pants-free, wearing only trunks, leggings and open-toed heels to give basic layering pieces a little more shine. From the show, one could easily see that the possibilities for wearing hooded sweatshirts in 2023 are endless. Then again, everything looks better on the runway, especially when it’s located at the beautiful Palais d’Iéna in Paris. Taking them off the runway and into the real world is the real test, which is why I decided to tackle the budding hoodie trend in my latest installment of Ways to Wear.

Below, explore my take on four hoodie looks from Miu Miu’s Fall/Winter 23 runway show and shop the basics that are ready for total domination.

You likely already have every piece you need to recreate this look, from leggings to a turtleneck sweater to a casual gray hoodie layered on top. the groundbreaking work Volkova did was to put them all together, creating interesting combinations of proportions, shapes and colors, and adding details like statement earrings and peek-a-boo leggings. Fortunately, these are all things we all have in our closets or can easily add to them. In my case, I chose a cashmere turtleneck sweater I got from Brooks Brothers last winter and added a white zip-up, a camel tweed coat and a pair of black leggings that would otherwise only know the inside of my local Planet Fitness. To these outfits, I wore sheer tights, Nike sneakers and luxe accessories, including my Prada 1995 replica bag, Jenny Bird earrings and Linda Farrow oval sunglasses. The result? I could comfortably dress to go grocery shopping or to a fashion event.
