6 street style trends that everyone in New York is wearing

The F/W 23 Collection Fashion Month kicked off last week in New York City. While there was plenty of talk about trends and standout looks on the runways, the street style scene always provides just as much inspiration as fashion insiders incorporating the latest pieces and styling ideas into their personal closets.

Leading up to New York Fashion Week, I asked industry experts to share their Fashion Month shopping lists and the pieces they plan to wear this season, and many of their choices predicted the unfolding street style trends – including everything from long coats to everything to eye-catching red accessories. But as Fashion Month begins, we’re starting to see more. Here, learn about the six trends we spotted from the most fashionable attendees at New York Fashion Week and shop our picks for pieces to incorporate into your closet.

Coats

Long, floor-length coats were one of the trends of the Spring/Summer 23 runways, including collections from brands like Saint Laurent, The Row and Beare Park. Show-goers embraced the movement to lengthen hemlines, pairing long coats with everything from halter dresses to denim.

A touch of red

Red is the main color sweeping New York street style. Interestingly, it is often worn as a smaller detail, such as a red turtleneck sweater layered under a trench coat, or a pair of bright socks with an exposed heel.

White jeans

White jeans seem to be a summer staple, but they gave an incredibly fresh look to the New York style of Fashion Week. Winter looks incorporated faux fur jackets, turtlenecks and sneakers, which added an element of elegance and freshness.

Quiet Luxury Bag

This year saw an increase in simple, understated luxury handbags, which was echoed in the New York street style scene, with bags including the Bottega Veneta Intrecciato woven style and the Savette leather bag standing out.

Layered neutrals

Winter layers came in the form of neutrals such as beige, brown and black. Standout pieces included jackets with built-in scarves, while styling techniques such as adding a sweater over a jacket added interest to the look.

Denim skirt

Coats aren’t the only items that are getting longer in the hemline – skirts are also getting longer, in contrast to the ultra-short skirts that are popular in 2022. The maxi skirt comes in a variety of styles, but the denim version stands out.
